Dr. Brown gave a presentation on the Homo Florescience (nicknamed the Hobbit). This is theoried to be a species of human that is different from the Homo Sapien species.

There are significant differences between the pygmy peoples and Homo floresiensis. The people you're talking about are fully Homo sapiens sapiens, their proportions are within typical ranges for people. Their heights are also not nearly as small as these people were.
Homo floresiensis, however, is clearly NOT Homo sapiens. The skull proportions and shape are much closer to that of Homo erectus, a early hominid now not beleived to be ancestral to modern humans. The teeth actually are different, in that some have (as I remember) three roots fused together, which is also normal for H. erectus, but not H. sapiens. There is a couple of other differences in the teeth that also set them apart from modern humans- but I don't remember the specifics. They lack a chin, which all H. sapiens have (but admittedly some are not so obvious!) There were other features of the skull that match other species such as H. erectus, but not H. sapiens.
The lower jaw is also closer to earlier hominids. Humans have a rather u shaped, rounded jaw. The jaw is a little less rounded, maybe a bit more rectangular than is normal for H. sapiens. There is a picture in one of my texts that shows a chimp jaw, a H. erectus jaw, and a H. sapiens jaw. The jaw that was found looked almost identical to H. erectus to me, but NOT identical to H. sapiens.
The skeleton is VERY different. The proportions are more in line with Australopithecines afarensis (ie, "Lucy"). The ratio of bone length to cross section indicate that H. floresiensis was massively muscled, more like a chimpanzee (or maybe gorilla) than H. sapiens. The arms are also much longer in proportion to the body than H. sapiens, again very much like A. afarensis.
What is interesting is that all of the skeletons found so far are clearly female (one was a child which is difficult to determine the sex). The first question that comes to my mind is "Are we seeing some sort of cultural pattern here, or what?"
I must admit that biological anthropology (or physical anthropology) is not my strong point, I lean more towards archaeology, linguistic anthropology, and cultural anthropology. Even with my limited knowledge of the subject, it was obvious that the skeletons looked more like an earlier species of hominid. Also, I wasn't able to directly observe any of the remains, but my observations are based upon photographs shown by Dr. Brown.
I hope this helps you!
Bob
